Pictures of the 22-year-old wearing a short red dress without underwear at a recent pre-show event were splashed on the front page of a local Brazilian newspaper and went viral on the internet.

"Colombia had to be spoken to and told she needed to wear underpants as what she was doing was totally inappropriate," a source told Fox News. "People have been pretty upset by it; there have been photos and media appearances where she has completely had her crotch out."

Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organisation, added: "There were several girls in short dresses which is a little concerning, but when I saw the [commando] picture on the front page of one of the local papers [I] was very, very surprised.

"Our supervisors talked to all of the contestants about dressing appropriately, and one of our PR people spoke to her [Robayo] and apparently she said she was wearing underwear. But regardless, it created quite a stir here for a few days."

The competition begins on Monday with a record number of contestants.

Miss Universe reprimanded over underwear? A Miss Universe contestant has reportedly been reprimanded for not wearing underwear during official appearances.Miss Colombia, Catalina Robayo, was told off by pageant bosses for going commando while wearing short skirts.

Robayo, who will compete for the Miss Universe crown next week, claimed she was wearing underwear.

Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organisation (MUO), said the 22-year-old was questioned by officials about her fashion choices.

"There were several girls in short dresses which was a little concerning, but when I saw the [commando] picture on the front page of one of the local papers, [I] was very, very surprised," told FOXNews.com.

Miss Colombia Catalina Robayo  told off for not wearing underwear. Miss Universe organisers have been forced to reprimand a contestant for not wearing underwear during media appearances in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Photographers snapped more than they bargained for as Miss Colombia Catalina Robayo went commando while wearing very short skirts and speaking to reporters as part of her official pageant duties last week, Fox News reports.

President of the Miss Universe Organisation Paula Shugart told Fox she was shocked when she saw what looked like Ms Robayo's bare nether regions on the front page of a newspaper.

"When I saw the [commando] picture on the front page of one of the local papers and was very, very surprised," Ms Shugart said.

But when pageant officials confronted Ms Robayo, the 22-year-old insisted she had been wearing underwear, Ms Shugart said.

All the contestants have since been lectured about dressing appropriately.
