Apple Let's Talk iPhone5 Event, Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” event will take place in Cupertino, California this morning, where new CEO Tim Cook is expected to present the much-hyped iPhone 5. Apple has been vague about what the event will entail, and any new products consumers might expect to be presented today, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mills from churning.
That Apple will launch its iPhone 5 today is an almost certainty in the minds of most Apple enthusiasts, with product shipments and orders for new parts hinting at a new phone over the last few months. However, there is still no confirmation that Apple will release an iPhone 5 — in the past, Apple modified the iPhone 3 to get the iPhone 3GS. Apple could make a similar move this time around, modifying the current iPhone 4 to get an iPhone 4GS rather than an iPhone 5.

Also, there has been a lot of talk about a cheaper iPhone that can compete in the lower-end smartphone market. Again, no rumors have been confirmed by Apple, but it might be that it’s new product release today will simply be a pared-down version of the iPhone 4.

Most of the other rumors swirling around today’s event are about the features of the new iPhone 5. Some say it will have a teardrop shape like the MacBook Air, others that it will have a larger screen, a voice-command feature, 64GB of storage, an 8 megapixel camera, a touch-sensitive home button, and world-phone capabilities.

Some rumors have Sprint being named the exclusive carrier of the iPhone 5, while others say it will be announced that T-Mobile will begin offering an iPhone for the first time, though T-Mobile representatives have denied such a claim. Most expect that, if an iPhone 5 is released today, existing partners AT&T and Verizon Wireless will offer it.

Amazon tablet to be called Kindle Fire?, We told you about the Amazon Kindle Tablet announcement earlier this week, and the big reveal is tomorrow. In the meantime, a few more details on the hotly-anticipated device have been leaked.This 7in tab is set to debut at around half the price of perhaps its biggest rival, the iPad 2. So for your £200-250, you’ll get a heavily modified, custom version of Android 2.1 running on what’s looking to be a sub-1GHz processor, backed by a mere 6GB of storage. Supposedly, there will also be little or nothing in the way of connectivity and hardware controls.

Nothing to set the world on fire, then, which is ironic given that TechCrunch has discovered Amazon’s tablet will likely be called the Kindle Fire. Mind you, there is a certain logical progression to the name what with kindling already provided, so kudos to whichever bright spark thought it up.

What with plenty of established rivals (though admittedly few worth considering at this price point), Amazon might have a hard time getting consumers to warm to its offering, especially in the US where it will face strong competition from Barnes and Nobles’s rumoured Nook 2. However, it does have a lot of brand recognition and a strong established marketplace to make this tablet a potential success. Amazon tablet to be called Kindle Fire?

Facebook Page Design, Facebook plans to roll out a major redesign of user profiles at its f8 developer conference this week, Mashable has learned. Details about the redesign are sparse, but two sources familiar with Facebook's plans (who have asked to remain anonymous) have told us that the redesign is "major" and will make Facebook profiles nexuses for consuming content.The profile changes will be part of a wider launch, one that will include launch of a music and media platform.

Here's what we know so far about the profile redesign:

-- The redesigned profiles will be more "sticky," says one source. One of the goals of the new profiles is to get users to stay on them for longer.

-- We already knew Facebook is launching a media platform at f8. However, we've also learned that the platform -- which will include music and video from partner sites -- will display the media content a user is watching or listening to on their profiles. Essentially, when you're listening to Lady Gaga on Spotify, your friends can see and access that on your Facebook profile. This confirms a recent New York Times report.

-- The redesigned profiles are part of a larger push into social ecommerce. We don't exactly know what that means, but we've heard whispers that Facebook intends to give Facebook Credits more prominence. We've also heard that a Facebook app store may emerge at f8.

-- Facebook's push into ecommerce may be related Project Spartan, an HTML5-based mobile platform rumored to be launching soon.

Facebook is being tight-lipped about the changes; the company declined to comment on this story. However, more and more pieces of Facebook's big launch continue to leak out as the excitement builds for f8 (feel free to send us screenshots if you have any) The company is currently under lockdown, trying to fix the final bugs before Thursday's big launch.

iPhone 5 arriving by mid-October, The New York Times ran a piece Thursday saying that the next iPhone is "just weeks away," citing "an Apple employee who asked not to be named because he was not allowed to speak publicly for the company." Meanwhile, according to TechCrunch, the CEO of France Telecom is saying the phone's launch date is Oct. 15 — for France at least.

Seth Weintraub at 9to5Mac says that he's heard there will be two phones, an iPhone 5 and an "aggressively priced" version of the iPhone 4, available by Oct. 7.

Our thinking has been that the unveiling event will probably happen on Oct. 3 or 4, and then the phone would be available within two weeks of that. These nuggets corroborate that assumption pretty nicely, especially since iPhone availability in France could easily be later than in the U.S.

The Times' Nick Bilton goes on to say that "an engineer familiar with the new iPhone" told him it would be "fairly different" than the iPhone 4, with an 8-megapixel camera and an A5 dual-core processor, as we suspected. Furthermore, Bilton writes that sources told him that either this phone or the next one will contain a telecom chip made by Qualcomm which includes near-field communication (NFC). This turns the phone into a so-called "digital wallet," that can be waved over a sensor to make a credit-card payment, for example. Google's Nexus S phone already has NFC built in.

Weintraub says that the new iPhone should be quite attractive:

The iPhone 5 itself is a sight to behold, we’ve been told. It is impossibly light, yet much firmer than Samsung Galaxy phones which are backed in plastic. The camera rivals point and shoot cameras and will be a major marketing point for this device.

It's worth noting that while nobody seems to confirm or deny it, the iPhone 5 name dominates the coverage, while the earlier rumored iPhone 4S name is nowhere to be found. Perhaps the lower end model will be renamed iPhone 4S, but that doesn't quite make sense because it's supposed to be cheaper than the current iPhone, so why would it be faster?

While all the latest millings seem to match previous iPhone 5 rumors, there is some alleged production trouble. According to Weintraub, at least on one assembly line is "seeing continued design and production delays," which could cause delays or at least shortages "all the way into 2012."

So if you really want an iPhone, you had better check your camping gear, because you might end up sleeping outside your local Apple Store in the coming weeks.

Town hall bosses have been accused of insulting taxpayers with plans to give binmen £400 iPad gadgets to do their rounds.Bury Council, facing budget cuts of £18 million, is reportedly to buy 22 of the tablet computers to mount on dashboards guiding bin wagons around the town in Greater Manchester.

The council, which will not say how much it has spent on the Apple devices, claims it will help save cash by improving collection rates, customer service standards and boost recycling.

Robert Oxley, campaign manager of the Taxpayers' Alliance, said: "It beggars belief that a council making huge savings can find this money to splash out on iPads.

"Residents want bin services that are reliable and efficient, not council staff monitoring what they're throwing out with expensive gimmicks.

"It's an insult to local residents who are tightening their belts in tough times that the council is wasting their money on fanciful ideas like this."

Bury Council, which must make £18 million in savings over the next three years, is buying 22 of the iPads, one for each bin wagon, which if bought in shops for around £400, comes to a bill of £8,800.

The devices must also be mounted in bin wagon cabs and refuse staff will also have to be trained to use the gadgets.

The scheme is due to be presented to councillors in a report by officers but has reportedly already been rubber-stamped as going ahead.

No-one at Bury Council, or councillors contacted, was available to verify the information or give comment.

Japan has a sophisticated early warning system which collects readings from more than 1,000 seismic sensors.

More than 16,000 people died in the 2011 quake and subsequent tsunami.

Earthquake warnings are typically issued through radio, television and text message under the Area Mail Disaster Information Service.

For SMS, the system works by sending out a mass cell broadcast (SMS-CB) to all handsets in a designated area.

3G cellphones are compelled by Japanese law to include SMS-CB technology. However, many foreign-made phones do not currently support it.

The message accompanying Apple's new feature reads: "The earthquake early warning/alert. When the setting is on, your battery life may be reduced."

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs sent an email to Japanese employees immediately after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami offering help and support if they or their families were affected by the disaster.
