World's hottest chilli contest leaves two in hospital

World's hottest chilli contest leaves two in hospital
World's hottest chilli contest leaves two in hospital, They won't be eating curry in a hurry! Participants in 'world's hottest chilli-eating contest' left writhing on the floor as two are hospitalised.
A curry house is under fire after its 'world's hottest chilli' competition landed two people in hospital.

Competitors who had entered Edinburgh restaurant Kismot's curry-eating challenge started writhing on the floor in agony, vomiting and fainting.

One customer, Curie Kim - whose first name is pronounced 'curry' - was so unwell after sampling the 'Kismot Killer' dish that she had to be taken by ambulance to hospital twice in a few hours suffering from stomach pains, vomiting and acid indigestion.
Participants had to be over the age of 18 and were required to sign a legal disclaimer prior to taking part in the competition.
Even though two members of the British Red Cross were on hand, they could not cope with the nature of the injuries sustained.

The restaurant's website describes the competition as 'not a contest to see who can eat the most, but a test of endurance against a top secret nuclear strength recipe using some of the world's hottest chillies.'

Today, the Scottish Ambulance Service said it wanted the restaurant to review the way the event was managed.

Paramedics attended the restaurant on Saturday - the busiest day of the week for the ambulance service - at a cost of several hundred pounds.

Curry house owner Abdul Ali admitted that he would have to 'tone down' the contest in future.

Half of the 20 people who took part in the challenge dropped out after witnessing the first ten diners vomiting, collapsing, sweating and panting.

In previous years, the Kismot Killer dish has caused diners to suffer nose bleeds and one elderly man had to be taken to hospital.
Miss Kim, 21, a Korean exchange student at Edinburgh University, came second in the competition, but admitted the accolade 'came with a price'.

She said: 'I've always enjoyed spicy foods and thought this was for a good cause. But it came with a price, I had to be taken to the hospital twice.
'I first went to hospital at around 4pm and the second time was at 9pm.

'It got really bad. I have never endured such pain in my life.'

Mr Ali said he felt the competition had gone well, but that he had overestimated how much heat the competitors could take.

Beverly Jones, from Newington, was crowned curry queen after she managed to finish nine spoonfuls of the chilli-filled dish.

Mike Lavin, from Polwarth, came fifth, but he, too, had to be taken to hospital.

The competition raised hundreds of pounds for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland charity, Mr Ali said.

But local councillor Gordon Mackenzie branded the event a 'shambles'.

He said: 'The owners owe a debt to the ambulance service, and I hope they'll find some way of making it up to them.'

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: 'We would urge the organisers to review the way in which this event is managed in future in order to avoid another situation where emergency ambulances are required to treat their customers.'

Kismot is well-known in Edinburgh for its bizarre menu creations including marshmallow naan bread, vindaloo ice-cream and chocolate curry.

Owen Wilson teases Zoolander 2 plot

Owen Wilson teases Zoolander 2 plot
Owen Wilson teases Zoolander 2 plot, Earlier this year Ben Stiller revealed he'd finished the script for Zoolander 2 and had submitted it to the studio pending their approval. Now, Owen Wilson has added more information on the sequel, saying his character, VH1 Model Of The Year Hansel, has suffered a disfiguring injury since the 2001 original.

During an interview with SlashFilm to promote forthcoming film Big Year, Wilson revealed that Hansel suffers a similar fate to Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky which seriously hampers his modelling career.

Back in January, Stiller announced he and Zoolander screenwriter Justin Theroux had finished their script, which will pick up with the dim-witted models 10 years after the 2001 film took place. Owen Wilson teases Zoolander 2 plot,

"Most of it is set in Europe," said Stiller. "I don't want to give away too much, but it's basically Derek and Hansel 10 years later, though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime."

He added:

Their lives have changed and they're not really relevant anymore. It's a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he's expressed interest in doing it. I think Mugatu is an integral part of the Zoolander story, so yes, he features in a big way. Owen Wilson teases Zoolander 2 plot,

Noel Gallagher blasts X Factor groups

Noel Gallagher blasts X Factor groups
Noel Gallagher blasts X Factor groups, Noel Gallagher has attacked X Factor and criticised one of the show's judges. In an interview with the Radio Times, the Oasis guitarist claimed the ITV reality show had "nothing to do with music".

"If somebody is dangling this carrot of 'fame and fortune' in front of a check-out girl from Barnsley who can sing like Britney Spears then they're going to go for it," the 41-year-old said.

"But it seems to bring on instant mental illness. You're going in at the top, with a number one that sells 750,000 or whatever and you've got someone like Dannii Minogue telling you you're really talented - and if there's one person in the room who wouldn't know talent if it kicked them in the a**e it's Dannii Minogue. Noel Gallagher blasts X Factor groups,

Gallagher claimed that the lifespan of an X-Factor contestant is limited, telling those on the show they would end up "trying to sustain your profile by going on celebrity shows."

"Instead of instant fame and celebrity and all your ex-boyfriends and girlfriends coming out of the cupboard and your family being ripped apart, the prize ought to be, 'I'll introduce you to someone who might introduce you to someone who might, if you're very lucky, know a producer who'd record one of your songs'. Noel Gallagher blasts X Factor groups,

"That's the only way to make any money," he added.

Survive plane crash course

Survive plane crash course
Survive plane crash course, British Airways is offering its frequent flyers the chance to trade in their air miles for a course on how to survive a plane crash.
For around £125 - the average cost of a round-trip from London to Rome - members of the airline's Executive Club can sign up for the four-hour safety session when it starts next year. Survive plane crash course,

UK airlines actually have a brilliant aviation safety record, with no British passenger jet suffering a fatal smash since 47 people died in the British Midland 737 crash in Leicestershire in 1989.

Which might beg the question of why BA finds it necessary to offer the course. The airline actually developed the passenger-training programme in response to a request by BP, which sends staff into remote areas of the world where safety standards are lower.

And studies have shown that many plane crashes are survivable, with passengers often dying in the moments after the accident. Civil Aviation Authority research actually showed that a large number of passenger struggled with the most basic task of undoing the seat belt.

Andy Clubb, the BA manager running the course, told the Independent: 'It makes passengers safer when travelling by giving additional skills and information, it dispels all those internet theories about the "brace position" and it just gives people so much more confidence in flying.' Amazon tablet to be called Kindle Fire?

Amazon tablet to be called Kindle Fire?
Amazon tablet to be called Kindle Fire?, We told you about the Amazon Kindle Tablet announcement earlier this week, and the big reveal is tomorrow. In the meantime, a few more details on the hotly-anticipated device have been leaked. This 7in tab is set to debut at around half the price of perhaps its biggest rival, the iPad 2. So for your £200-250, you’ll get a heavily modified, custom version of Android 2.1 running on what’s looking to be a sub-1GHz processor, backed by a mere 6GB of storage. Supposedly, there will also be little or nothing in the way of connectivity and hardware controls.

Nothing to set the world on fire, then, which is ironic given that TechCrunch has discovered Amazon’s tablet will likely be called the Kindle Fire. Mind you, there is a certain logical progression to the name what with kindling already provided, so kudos to whichever bright spark thought it up.

What with plenty of established rivals (though admittedly few worth considering at this price point), Amazon might have a hard time getting consumers to warm to its offering, especially in the US where it will face strong competition from Barnes and Nobles’s rumoured Nook 2. However, it does have a lot of brand recognition and a strong established marketplace to make this tablet a potential success. Amazon tablet to be called Kindle Fire?

Flying pig used to recreate Pink Floyd Animals cover

Flying pig used to recreate Pink Floyd Animals cover
Flying pig used to recreate Pink Floyd Animals cover, Pink Floyd are recreating their iconic Animals album sleeve by floating a flying pig over Battersea Power Station - more than 35 years after the stunt was first performed.

The inflatable pig first flew above the London landmark in 1976 for the band's Animals LP.

The event marks the release of remastered copies of the band's albums along with previously unreleased material.

Unfortunately, the pig used in the original shoot has been declared unfit to fly.

Instead, a brand new, high frequency, welded PVC pig has been made for the occasion.
The original cover shoot took place over three days but on the second day the helium-filled pig broke free and drifted over to a field in Kent.
The new shoot will be staged on a different side of the decommissioned power station to the cover due to partial demolition and temporary buildings in the area.

The 30ft-long porker, which was tethered to the ground, was filled with 12 canisters of gas.

As well as the reissues, the band's 14 studio albums will be available digitally and in a box set from today.

There will also be lavish new versions of Dark Side Of The Moon coming out in November.

The label EMI stated in May that the massive reissue campaign, dubbed "Why Pink Floyd...?," aims to broaden the famed British band's legacy.

Pink Floyd has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide.

Pippa Middleton to move in with boyfriend

Pippa Middleton to move in with boyfriend
Pippa Middleton to move in with boyfriend, Pippa Middleton is reportedly close to moving in with her boyfriend. The 28-year-old brunette – the sister of Britain’s Duchess Catherine – has been given a set of keys to Alex Loudon’s apartment in west London and has moved many of her belongings into the property.

A friend told the Mail on Sunday newspaper: “They are very much an item and Pippa tends to stay at his place on a Wednesday, Thursday and often Friday night.

“She has her own place in Chelsea and she splits her time between their houses, but she’s spending more time at Alex’s these days. She’s moved some of her things in and he has given her a set of keys so Pippa comes and goes as she pleases.

“Alex absolutely dotes on her and they are really very serious.

“They do spend a lot of time together but they like to keep their romance under the radar. Alex particularly doesn’t like lots of fuss and he finds the interest in their relationship baffling and somewhat bemusing.”

The couple – who have been dating for three years – recently celebrated Pippa’s birthday with her parents, Catherine, her husband Prince William and Alex has the approval of all of his girlfriend’s loved ones, fuelling speculation they will marry.

The source said: “They had a lovely, low-key evening. After a pasta dinner and a birthday cake, they went back to Pippa’s house for cocktails.

“William, Kate and Pippa’s parents adore Alex. They trust him and see him as one of the family. They’d be very happy if he slipped a ring on Pippa’s finger.”

Another source added: “Pippa is very much in love with Alex and she may well end up marrying him.”

Sigourney Weaver Avatar 2

Sigourney Weaver Avatar 2, I’m going to assume that as Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time just about everyone has seen it; therefore I am able to talk about spoilers freely. If you haven’t seen Avatar yet then look elsewhere, as spoilers will be written below.

Sigourney Weaver, who plays Dr. Grace Augustine, recently appeared on French TV show “Le Grand Journal” and was asked whether she would be appearing in Avatar 2. Those who saw the film will remember she was shot by Quaritch and attempts to transfer her mind into her Avatar failed. This lead to the wailing spirit lady Na’vi to pronounce her dead at the scene, or in Na’vi terms, “she is with Eywa now”.

In the interview (which you can watch in heavily dubbed French below) Weaver says that her character still exists “in the tree” and director James Cameron has thought of some ideas on how to keep “the family together” (i.e. the main cast). Considering Cameron created Pandora and everything in it he can do just about anything he wants, so bringing Grace Augustine shouldn’t be a problem, especially as her spirit is still hanging with Eywa.

Sperm bank Cryos turns down redheads

Sperm bank Cryos turns down redheads, The world’s largest sperm bank has started turning down redheaded donors because there is too little demand for their sperm.

Ole Schou, Cryos’s director, said that there had been a surge in donations in recent years, allowing the facility to become much more picky about its donors.

“There are too many redheads in relation to demand,” he told told Danish newspaper Ekstrabladet. “I do not think you chose a redhead, unless the partner – for example, the sterile male – has red hair, or because the lone woman has a preference for redheads. And that’s perhaps not so many, especially in the latter case.”

Mr Schou said the only reliable demand for sperm from redheaded donors was from Ireland, where he said it sold “like hot cakes”…

Cryos pays donors up to $500, and sends its semen to over 65 countries worldwide.

Henry Winkler appointed honorary OBE for dyslexia work

Henry Winkler appointed honorary OBE for dyslexia work, Henry Winkler, the actor best known as the Fonz from Happy Days and Barry Zuckerkorn in Arrested Development, has been awarded an honorary OBE for his dyslexia work.

Winkler was diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult. Since then, he has worked to raise awareness of the condition and to show children that dyslexia is not a disability or something shameful. That work has included tours of UK schools.

Winkler is also behind a series of popular books featuring Hank Zipzer, a teen suffering from dyslexia who is in some ways modelled on Winkler. In this Q&A, Winkler discusses their similarities and the aim of the Hank Zipzer books in general.

An honorary OBE does not require the bearer to swear allegiance to the Queen, but also does not confer the title ‘Sir’. So technically Henry Winkler can’t refer to himself as Sir Henry Winkler, although the rules are pretty relaxed, as with Bob Geldof, an Irish citizen who is nevertheless commonly referred to as Sir Bob Geldof in the media.
