Today is Constitution Day

Today is Constitution Day, The celebration of Constitution Day in its current form dates back a mere 3 when Congress passed a law requiring all U.S. schools receiving any Federal funding to teach students about the Constitution on September 17 or, if not a business day, the first business day thereafter, each year.

Senator Robert Byrd (D-WVA) is the force behind Constitution Day; he proposed the legislation mandating the celebration in 2004. Prior to that time, there was no requirement that schools teach children about the Constitution on Constitution Day.

President Eisenhower issued a proclamation designating September 17 to 23 Constitution Week in 1956.

A predecessor to Constitution Day, "I am an American Day" was first celebrated in 1940 on the third Sunday in May. President Truman changed the name to Citizenship Day in 1952 and moved the celebration to its current date.

September 17 was selected as Constitution Day to commemorate the adjournment of the Constitutional Convention in Philadephia in 1787.
